SAG Awards will continue winning streak for Robert Downey Jr. (‘Oppenheimer’)
How do press and industry love Robert Downey Jr.? Let me count the ways. He has already won Golden Globe, Critics Choice and BAFTA Awards for his “Oppenheimer” performance as antagonistic bureaucrat Lewis Strauss, on top of prizes from numerous regional critics groups and a second place finish at the National Society of Film Critics Awards. It’s looking pretty likely that he’ll continue his Best Supporting Actor steamroller at the SAG Awards and then the Oscars.
But there’s still a ghost of a chance for another actor to win SAG. As of this writing Downey is the overwhelming favorite with 31/10 odds based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. All 16 Expert journalists we’ve surveyed thus far say Downey will be the winner. Our 11 Gold Derby Editors are also unanimous that Downey will add another trophy to his collection.
But our elite users don’t think this race is so cut-and-dried. While a whopping 20 of our Top 24 Users agree with the consensus, three of them think Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”) will achieve one of the biggest upsets of the season, while one is betting on Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), who has won numerous SAG Awards for his work on TV. Our All-Star Top 24 also leave the door open for a surprise: 22 agree that it will be Downey, but two of them are going with Gosling. Could the minority report be correct?
Downey has had a couple of substantial advantages throughout the season. The first is that he co-stars in the Best Picture front-runner. The second is that Downey has arguably the most compelling behind-the-scenes story. A major Hollywood talent struggles with addiction and comes back to become one of the biggest movie stars in the world thanks to the “Iron Man” and Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Now a respected veteran of the industry, he has returned to prestige filmmaking and is finally ready to get his flowers.
