Report: Marlins Sign Two-Time All-Star Shortstop in Free Agency

0

The Miami Marlins and shortstop Tim Anderson have agreed to a one-year contract worth $5 million, ESPN’s Jesse Rogers first reported.

Anderson spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Chicago White Sox, becoming a cornerstone of the team while making two All-Star games. He had a batting average of at least .300 for four straight seasons, a stretch that included a batting title in 2019.

Last year, however, Anderson struggled mightily in Chicago, hitting just .245 with just one home run in 123 games. His .582 OPS was the worst in baseball in 2023 among qualified hitters, as he was one of only three hitters with at least 500 plate appearances and an OPS below .600.

Shortstop Tim Anderson is reportedly signing a one-year deal with the Marlins.

Anderson will be looking to bounce back in Miami as the Marlins’ likely starting shortstop in 2024. Last year, Miami split shortstop reps between Jon BertiJoey Wendle and Garrett Hampson, and both Wendle and Hampson left during free agency. Besides Anderson, the Marlins also added Nick Gordon and Vidal Bruján to their infield in the offseason.

The Marlins were a surprise playoff team last season, earning the second wild card spot in the National League before losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round.
