GUEYDAN, La. (KLFY) -- Gueydan High School has released students early today due to a gas leak, officials said.

The Vermilion Parish School System posted on its Facebook page at 8:55 a.m. today that students would be evacuated to the off site location at the Civic Center because of a potential gas leak near the stadium and under the advisement of city officials.

Officials later announced that students would be released from the Civic Center.

"At 9:45 we will load buses or students can be picked up from the Civic Center," the post read. "If your child drove to school they will be escorted back to campus to get their vehicles also. The gas leak has caused the gas to be turned off and has shut down parts of the school."

Most students had left the Civic Center by 10 a.m., officials said.

"A big shout out and thank you to our Gueydan Area Bus drivers who went above and beyond to get back to school and offer to get all the kids where they needed to be on a moments notice," another post read. "Thanks to all."

Authorities said the effort was hampered somewhat by the widespread cell phone outage that has cut off mobile phone service to many in the area and nationwide this morning.
