Manchester United rekindle interest in Serie A contract rebel - report
Manchester United have rekindled their interest in Juventus contract rebel Adrien Rabiot with a view to snapping him up on a free transfer.
The 28-year-old is nearing the end of his contract with the Serie A giants, which expires at the end of the season, and SPORT reports that United are among several clubs monitoring his situation.
Spanish champions Barcelona are among those keeping a watchful eye on Rabiot’s contract situation and are seriously weighing up the possibility of landing the French midfielder.
However, United are also in the mix and could reinforce their midfield options by finally luring the France international to Old Trafford without spending a penny in transfer fees.
Rabiot has been a regular for the Bianconeri this season, featuring in Massimiliano Allegri’s starting line-up 23 times across all competitions and returning four goals and three assists.
He remains a key part of the manager’s set-up, but the Old Lady are struggling to reach an agreement with the Frenchman who signed a one-year extension last summer.
Nothing but speculation
Erik ten Hag was keen to land Rabiot in 2022 and had convinced him of the project at Old Trafford, but United refused to meet the outrageous salary demands from the player’s camp.
Juventus retained his services on a short-term deal but he has naturally been linked with a move to United with his contract nearing a conclusion, considering their long-standing interest.
However, a move is unlikely to happen. Even though snapping him up at no cost seems appealing, United are better off chasing more promising options on the transfer market.
United’s revamped recruitment system are not expected to consider him a potential target, especially with Ten Hag’s control over player acquisition expected to be significantly limited.
