HIGHWAY 101
Alleged auto thief
chased into Marin
A car thief escaped a police pursuit through Marin and two other counties, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The chase started at about 7:15 p.m. Saturday in Santa Rosa, where a CHP officer saw someone driving a Hyundai that had been reported stolen. The driver would not yield to a traffic stop, CHP Officer David deRutte said.
While fleeing south on Highway 101, the driver crashed into a car in Cotati and injured two people. The driver stole a Honda Accord with a Pomeranian dog inside at a nearby gas station and returned to the highway, deRutte said.
A CHP helicopter later lost sight of Honda when it drove into a wooded area near Highway 13 in Alameda County, deRutte said.
Officers detained the driver’s passenger at the Cotati gas station. Savanna Vethschwab, 25, of Oakland was arrested on suspicion of theft and drug offenses and booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
