Blow for United as 32 yo coach leaves to join MLS side as the league's youngest manager

0

Manchester United have confirmed Eric Ramsay has left the club to join Minnesota United.

The 32-year-old will become the youngest head coach in Major League Soccer (MLS) history upon his arrival at the Allianz Field.

He will follow in the footsteps of other British coaches like Phil Neville, Wayne Rooney and Dean Smith, who all left to work in America.

Minnesota finished 11th in the MLS last season but have begun the 2024 campaign with a 2-1 victory at Austin.

The Red Devils released a statement on Manutd.com that read: “We would like to thank Eric for his contribution, and wish him the best of luck in the US in his first head coach role.”

Blow for United

Eric Ramsay began his career as a Lead Professional Development Phase Coach at Swansea City before becoming Shrewsbury Town’s academy manager in 2017.

The 32-year-old moved to Chelsea in 2019, where he coached the club’s under-23s.

The Welsh football expert joined Manchester United in 2021 as a player development and set-piece coach under then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Following Solskjaer’s departure, Ramsay continued to be an important part of the coaching set-up under Ralf Rangnick and then Erik ten Hag.

He was highly rated at Old Trafford and Ten Hag was also one of his biggest admirers.

The Dutchman didn’t want him to leave when he received an offer from Blackpool over a month ago.

Ramsay rejected the approach from the League One side but the opportunity to manage in MLS finally turned his head and United reluctantly decided to let him go.
