Family sues 7-Eleven for $3M after fatal shooting at Northeast Portland store
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A 7-Eleven in Northeast Portland is facing a lawsuit that claims its negligence led to a man’s death in 2022.
Jason Kinsfather, 49, was shot and killed at the store on Northeast Glenn Widing Drive after an altercation with an employee and the store’s unofficial security guard, Stevie Rayven Moore, on Nov. 23, 2022.
According to the lawsuit, first reported by KGW, the store had been paying Moore under the table with “money and/or food and drink” while he spent his time at the store and even used its location as a residential address.
A store employee had allegedly lent money to Moore to purchase a Glock .22 semi-automatic pistol that had been kept in a backpack behind the counter. After the employee got into an argument with Kinsfather, the lawsuit claims Moore motioned for him to hand over the backpack.
Moore, now 28, currently faces charges of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon after police say he shot Kinsfather with the gun outside the 7-Eleven.
The lawsuit claims Kinsfather’s death was caused by the company’s negligence in allowing Moore to work for the store when he was not qualified to do so. It also claims 7-Eleven is responsible for hiring an employee who allowed Moore to keep a gun at the store, helped him purchase the weapon, and handed the it over at the time of the shooting.
Kinsfather’s family is asking for $3 million in non-economic damages. Their suit claims the cost comes after the victim “suffered pain, fear, panic, terror, humiliation, and the knowledge that he was about to die.”
