Authorities say Paul Joseph Yauger, 57, was arrested for vandalizing several spots inside the monastery, a private residence for the Servite Friars who minister the 100-year-old Catholic sanctuary.
People with The Grotto said the damage was “extensive” when they saw that multiple rooms had been damaged, including the monastery chapel and sacred items.
Soon afterward, Portland Police arrested Yauger, who is being charged with burglary, criminal mischief and criminal trespassing.
No one was hurt during the incident.
