2024 Tony Awards nominations prediction center is open! 20 musicals vie for Broadway awards
Gold Derby’s 2024 Tony Awards nominations predictions center is now open and ready to forecast which shows will prevail in a highly competitive season. A whopping 20 musicals compete for Broadway’s highest honors and it’s time for you to decide which productions might rise to the top.
The 2023-2024 Broadway season began with a bang over the summer. Most notably when “Back to the Future: The Musical” flew a DeLorean over audiences at the Winter Garden Theatre. This flashy adaptation of the classic film is sadly the only new musical from the first half of the season that is still running. The Britney Spears fairytale mashup “Once Upon a One More Time,” Barry Manilow-penned “Harmony,” coming-of-age tale “How to Dance in Ohio,” and immersive disco party “Here Lies Love” all closed early. The latter show, in which David Bryne and Fatboy Slim drop audiences inside the life of dictator Imelda Marcos, might have the best shot at remaining in voters’ minds. Still, the other three shuttered tuners featured show-stopping performances from the likes of Jennifer Simard, Justin Guarini, Liam Pearce, Chip Zien, and Danny Kornfeld which may prove impossible to forget.

The winter saw the premiere of Adam Guettel’s “Days of Wine and Roses,” the composer’s first Broadway musical since “The Light in the Piazza.” After rapturous reviews for its stars Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James, the production extended its limited run through Tony season. It certainly fits the sophisticated type of musical voters have recently favored.
But competition is about to heat up considerably, thanks to a spring that is bursting at the seams with new musicals. A quartet of promising adaptations opens soon with “The Great Gatsby,” “The Notebook,” “The Outsiders” and “Water for Elephants.” Each of those stories have previous incarnations as both books and films, and now hope to capture new magic on stage. “The Great Gatsby will pair the powerhouse vocals of Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada, “The Notebook features a score from folk-pop artist Ingrid Michaelson, Pulitzer Prize finalist Adam Rapp tries his hand at musical book writing with “The Outsiders,” and “Water for Elephants” will mix circus acts with music from Pig Pen Theatre Co.
Tony voters might also be tickled by two true life stories on the rialto. Shaina Taub will bring “Suffs,” a depiction of the 1913 suffragist movement, to Broadway after a sold-out run at the Public Theatre. Then Eden Espinosa will return to Broadway for the first time since 2006 in “Lempicka.” With music from Matt Gould, the show details the life of Art Deco oil painter Tamara de Lempicka.
Two new musicals that utilize pre-existing music will also debut soon. Alicia Keys lends her song catalog to “Hell’s Kitchen,” a New York City-set story loosely inspired by her own upbringing. Songs by Huey Lewis and the News will be utilized in the new musical comedy “The Heart of Rock and Roll.” Given that “Back to the Future: The Musical” uses “Back in Time” during their finale, Huey Lewis will be represented in two Broadway musicals this spring!
As for musical revivals, the season has already seen a massive hit with “Merrily We Roll Along.” Director Maria Friedman breathed new life into the Stephen Sondheim gem, and performances from Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez have turned this show into the hottest ticket in town.
The hilarious performances of Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells (and a parade of surprise celebrity guests) also turned “Gutenberg! The Musical!” into a hit. Its limited run has already concluded, but voters will surely remember how hard they laughed while the two actors cycled through dozens of deranged characters. Over-the-top comedic performances are also what has audiences flocking to “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” where packed audiences are belly laughing at the ad libs Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer keeps throwing into her big number.
The remaining three revivals look like they might also be giant successes in their own right. “The Wiz” will burst onto the scene after touring the country, with the likes of Deborah Cox and Wayne Brady in tow. “The Who’s Tommy” will have its first-ever Broadway revival courtesy of the musical’s original director Des McAnuff. An immersive new version of “Cabaret” will cross the pond from London, with Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin taking on the iconic roles of the Emcee and Sally Bowles. It will surely be difficult for voters to choose which four of these productions will ultimately make the cut for Best Revival of a Musical.
