‘Hacks’ is back with Season 3 trailer, Max sets May premiere date for the Emmy-winning series
“Hacks” is still standing.
Almost two years after its acclaimed and Emmy Award-winning second season ended, Max has announced “Hacks” Season 3 will debut on May 2 with two new episodes. The nine-episode third season, which will debut two episodes weekly, concludes on May 30.
Here’s the logline: A year after parting, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) is riding high off the success of her standup special while Ava (Hannah Einbinder) pursues new opportunities back in Los Angeles.
In addition to the release news, which puts “Hacks” in the thick of the 2024 Emmys race, Max released a brief teaser for the third season. Accompanied by a remix of the Elton John track “I’m Still Standing,” the short trailer strings together highlights of Deborah’s successful comeback as well as her reconnection with Ava after the duo parted ways at the end of Season 2. (Their relationship having mended, Deborah fired Ava after the stand-up special to push the young writer to succeed on her own.)
“We try to bring them together in a way that deepens their relationship,” co-creator Lucia Aniello told Vanity Fair in an interview published Thursday. “It’s a truce, you could say. They’ve made up in a way that becomes another yarn in the tapestry of their relationship.”
“Hacks” has won six Emmys so far, including two for Smart as well as writing and directing honors for Season 1. It has also received several guest actor and actress nominations in its two seasons, something that should continue with Season 3. Guest stars announced for the new episodes include Helen Hunt, Christina Hendricks, Christopher Lloyd, Dan Bucatinsky, George Wallace, and Tony Goldwyn.
In addition to Smart and Einbinder (a two-time Emmy nominee for Best Comedy Supporting Actress), the “Hacks” cast includes Paul W. Downs, Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Kaitlin Olson, Christopher McDonald, Mark Indelicato, Rose Abdoo, and Lorenza Izzo. Downs and Stalter, two fan favorites, have been upped to series regulars for Season 3.
