Trump nabs huge victory after court rules he can stay on presidential ballot
Former President Donald Trump scored a major victory as the Supreme Court ruled that Colorado and other US states cannot bar him from their 2024 primary ballots.
The conservative majority court’s 9-0 decision on Monday morning was a huge blow to states pushing to bar Trump from their ballots in 2024. It effectively allows Trump to remain on primary ballots nationwide.
‘States may not unilaterally disqualify Donald Trump from the ballot’, reads the judgement.
The Supreme Court’s ruling came a day ahead of Super Tuesday, when 15 states will pick their Republican presidential nominees including Colorado.
‘BIG WIN FOR AMERICA!!!’ Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
The Colorado Supreme Court had determined that Trump due to his actions leading up to the January 6 Capitol riot could not serve as president again under Section 3 of the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment. The provision bars individuals who held government positions but then ‘engaged in insurrection’ from running for some offices.
But the high court ruled that Congress, instead of the states, can decide how the section is enforced against individuals seeking federal office, and that it applies to states beyond Colorado.
‘Because the Constitution makes Congress, rather than the states, responsible for enforcing section 3 against all federal officeholders and candidates, we reverse,’ states the ruling.
States retain the authority to prohibit individuals for running for state office under the provision.
