Task force to tackle gun-related suicides earns bipartisan support in Oregon Senate
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A bill that would create a task force to prevent gun-related suicides has passed the Oregon Senate with bipartisan support.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, Oregon has the 17th-highest suicide rate in the county. Within the state, suicides involving guns account for more than half of the total deaths annually.
Senate President Rob Wagner (D-Lake Oswego) said firearm suicides are a “statewide problem and a serious public health risk,” adding that "this task force will provide the legislature with evidenced-based, proven steps we can take to reduce firearm suicides, improve public safety, and support Oregonians in crisis."
Senate Bill 1503 would fund a 17-member panel consisting of four legislators and 13 community members that would focus on “developing recommendations for ways to reduce suicides by firearm and associated community safety risks.”
The task force would focus on supporting those experiencing suicidal ideation, eliminating barriers to support, safety and prevention methods, and risks to first responders.
The bill will also address domestic violence as a risk factor. Officials say veterans, men, and people over 75 are at particular risk.
If passed, the first report from the task force will be due to the legislature in September 2024. The bill now heads to the Oregon House.
