Iran witnesses decline in voter turnout for parliament and assembly elections

0

Over nearly half a century of the Islamic Republic’s existence in Iran, the regime has seen twelve terms of the Islamic Consultative Assembly and six terms of the Assembly of Experts, yet the recent results of these elections indicate a decline in participation compared to any other time.

Iran’s Interior Minister, Ahmad Vahidi, announced the final results of these elections yesterday, adding that “the participation rate was 41 per cent, with 25 million people participating in the elections.”

BBC Persian, in its report on the elections for the Islamic Consultative Assembly and the Assembly of Experts in Iran, citing analysts, writes that these elections were the “least lively” in terms of public participation in the history of the Islamic Republic regime.

It should be noted that these elections have entered the second round in at least 14 provinces of Iran.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is accused of widespread human rights violations, gender apartheid, and fanning the flames of conflicts in the Middle East, losing its popularity, especially after the Mahsa movement.

The recent elections in Iran have sparked debates and discussions regarding the future direction of the country’s political landscape amidst decreasing public participation and ongoing criticism of the regime’s actions both domestically and internationally.

With allegations of electoral irregularities and limited choices for voters, the outcome of these elections raises questions about the legitimacy of the political processes within the Islamic Republic of Iran.
