Rugby league coach in furious row with fan as bottle is thrown off supporter’s head and onlookers forced to step in

RUGBY LEAGUE chiefs are investigating an incident that saw Leigh staff go for a St Helens fan who allegedly hoped star John Asiata DIED.

Player welfare manager and assistant coach Steve Maden was caught on camera confronting the supporter immediately after Friday’s 12-4 loss.

Captain Asiata was among the group, some of whom lashed out following heated conversations.

A plastic bottle appeared to be launched at the supporter, who himself lunged towards them.

And Leigh sources believe a sickening threat was made as the controversial star, who was involved in two tackles that caused serious injuries to Saints players last season, was carried off with a calf injury.

One told SunSport: “He came flying down from his seat and shouted at John as he was carried off, ‘I hope you die Asiata.’

“John later confronted him about it, I had a go at him at half time and called him a disgusting man for coming out with something like that.

“He was sat about five or six rows up, to the right of the coaching area. A lot of people heard him.”

Leigh coach Adrian Lam said about the footage: “I’m not quite exactly over it myself but I think players should be protected at all times in that area (the one where benches go near fans).

“Where I sat, I could hear people abusing heavily.”

Rugby Football League chiefs have now launched a probe following the report from match commissioner Tony Brown.

Sources also understand more was said in both incidents, which resulted in complaints to St Helens’ stewards.

When approached by SunSport, a Saints spokesman said they will comply and work with the RFL.
