Snowmobiler killed during Washington avalanche

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- One person is dead after an avalanche Friday on Darland Mountain in Washington, officials said.

According to the Northwest Avalanche Center, two snowmobilers caused the slide at around 6,600 feet leading to one of the riders being fully buried.

The rider didn't survive, officials said.

Although the Avalanche Center said they don't know for sure, they said they believe the slide was due to older weak layers of snowpack, an issue which they said is not unique to just that area.

Officials said they will investigate the area further to gather more information.
