Stone Island Holds Its First U.S. Archival Exhibition in Los Angeles

Stone Island recently held its first archival exhibition, highlighting Selected Works ‘982 – ‘024 from Feb. 29 to March 3, in Los Angeles. The special event, which coincided with Frieze Los Angeles, brought several unexhibited pieces on display.

Stone Island president Carlo Rivetti spoke with Footwear News about the 42 archival pieces, which each represented important milestones for the fashion house.

According to Rivetti, the archival exhibition perfectly summed up the last four decades, though it was a challenge. “It is always hard to select among of 30,000 pieces of our archive,” Rivetti said. “We started with the very first piece — the 1982 Tela Stella — the fabric that gave life to Stone Island. We then selected the pieces that can better represent the evolution of the brand, the coating, the treatments.”

From there, a selection of reflective jackets were selected for showing, as well as seven rare pieces from the Stone Island Prototype Research Series. In addition to clothing, the event featured “films documenting some of the most impressive Stone Island techniques and innovations.”

The archival exhibition also consisted of a more interactive feature as it showed how fall 2023/2024 Stone Island Ice Jackets change their appearance with heat.

Collaborations were also on display, including key pieces Stone Island x Supreme, Stone Island x Nikelab and Stone Island x New Balance.

Speaking on the event and the partnership with Frieze, Rivetti added, “We have fans and collectors here and this exhibition is a way to get in touch with them, show them some of the key pieces that, through the years, have made Stone Island a well-respected brand, known for its unique research and innovation.”
