Four Sooners, Two Cowgirls Honored by Big 12 Women's Basketball Coaches

0

Oklahoma took three individual awards and had four players honored in the Big 12 Women's Basketball awards announced on Tuesday, as voted on by the league's coaches.

Oklahoma State had two players honored.

OU coach Jennie Baranczyk was named Coach of the Year, Skylar Vann was named Co-Player of the Year with Madison Booker of Texas, and Payton Verhulst was named Newcomer of the Year.

It's the fifth time a Sooner coach has won the Coach of the Year award, with Sherri Coale winning it four times, the last time in 2009.

It's the seventh time a Sooner has won Player of the Year honors, and the first time since Courtney Paris won the award in 2009.

Only Baylor has more Coach of the Year and Player of the Year awards than Oklahoma.

Verhulst is the third Sooner to win Newcomer of the Year and the first since Peyton Little in 2015.

Oklahoma finishes the Big 12 era with 30 total individual awards, with only Baylor ahead of the Sooners with 45.

Both Vann and Verhulst were named first team All-Big 12.

OSU's Stailee Heard was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.

Nevaeh Tot and Sahara Williams of OU and Anna Gret Asi of OSU were named Honorable Mention All-Big 12.

Others with Oklahoma ties earning honorable mention honors were Darianna Littlepage-Buggs of Baylor and from Classen High School, and former OU guard and Holland Hall product Gabby Gregory of Kansas State, plus Sand Springs grad Holly Kersgieter of Kansas.

Moore's Aaliyah Moore of Texas was named Second Team.
