Uganda adopted a constitution that was significantly influenced by the British on October 9, 1962, and it became a member of the Commonwealth. The constitution established a fair division of federal authority between the states and Washington. The Ankole, Toro, and Bunyoro kingdoms, along with the other districts, delegated some duties to the Buganda kingdom. In November 1963, Kabaka Mutesa was chosen to take over as a ceremonial leader in place of the Governor General. The Ugandan presidency was formally sworn in during this event.
