Rohit Sharma Notches 12th Test Century, Nears 400 Runs Milestone on Home Soil

On Day 2 of the Dharamsala Test, Rohit Sharma was in rampaging form, scoring his 12th century against England. The India skipper continued his red-hot form in the current World Test Championship cycle, scoring his second century of the series and coming close to reaching 400 runs. Rohit is the only Indian among the WTC’s top ten run scorers, as he and Shubman Gill drove India into the lead with a superb combination for the second wicket.

Rohit resumed on his overnight score of 52, going into overdrive from the start, reminiscent of his aggressive nature at the World Cup. Following a maiden and a tight over from James Anderson, Rohit displayed his strength by hitting six and four off back-to-back deliveries from Shoaib Bashir. Gill then seized hold of the following over, hitting Anderson for a maximum and two boundaries off three balls to take 14 off it as the pair’s connection developed.

England had a half-chance to remove Rohit on 68 when he flicked the ball past the leg slip fielder. That was Rohit’s last boundary for a time, but even with the India skipper in the backseat, Gill was unstoppable. Following Anderson, it was Mark Wood’s time to feel the heat, as the batter smashed a pair of magnificent boundaries to earn praise from his father in the grandstand.

Gill was the first to reach 400 runs for the series, his second-highest run total in a Test series after 529 against South Africa at home in 2019. Rohit broke the chains after a long silence. He allowed himself space and blasted Wood over the off-side for a stunning boundary, almost like he was getting ready for the IPL. The brilliance of that knock was that Ben Stokes had six fielders in the deep for Rohit, but he opted to go for extra cover for four. As the runs continued to flow, Rohit and Gill reached their century partnership.
