Maryland women’s basketball falls to Nebraska, 78-68, in Big Ten Tournament semifinals
Maryland women’s basketball’s Big Ten Tournament run is over.
The Terps fell short of becoming the first No. 8 seed to reach the conference championship game, losing to No. 5 seed Nebraska, 78-68, in the semifinals Saturday at Target Center in Minneapolis.
Jaz Shelley scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Huskers (22-10), who advanced to the Big Ten final for the first time since 2014. Nebraska will face the winner of Saturday’s other semifinal between No. 2 seed Iowa and No. 6 seed Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
Shyanne Sellers had 15 points to lead a balanced offense for the Terps (19-13), who had five players score in double digits. Faith Masonius added 14 points, Allie Kubek chipped in 11 and Brinae Alexander and Bri McDaniel each had 10.
The Terps trailed early, falling behind 25-12 at the end of the first quarter, before battling back to tie the game at 51 late in the third quarter. But Nebraska took over from there, outscoring Maryland 18-9 in the fourth quarter as Shelley hit a running jump shot with 1:25 left that effectively iced the game.
Despite the loss, Maryland is expected to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after defeating No. 1 seed and fourth-ranked Ohio State in the quarterfinals Friday.
