US-UK coalition airstrikes in Yemen kill 11, injure 14 amid rising tensions
The spokesperson for the Yemeni government announced that following the aerial attacks by the military coalition of the United States and the United Kingdom on Houthi positions, ports, and towns in the west of the country, at least 11 people were killed and 14 others were injured.
The television network Al Masirah, which is operated by the Houthis, reported that these attacks occurred on Monday, March 11, targeting Houthi positions, ports, and western towns in Yemen.
According to reports, at least 17 airstrikes were carried out in various parts of Yemen, including the ports of “Hodeidah” and “Ras Isa”.
These attacks followed the sinking of a commercial ship and the death of several civilians due to Houthi attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea.
Previously, CENTCOM had stated that the United States and its partners remain committed to protecting the freedom of navigation, striving to enhance the safety and security of international waters for commercial shipping.
These actions come as Houthi attacks in support of Palestinian groups began following clashes between Israel and Hamas.
The geopolitics of the Middle East, particularly about Iran’s role, adds another layer of complexity to the situation in Yemen. Iran is widely regarded as a key supporter of the Houthi rebels, providing them with financial and military assistance.
This support is part of Iran’s broader strategy to extend its influence across the Middle East, challenging the dominance of the United States and its allies, including Saudi Arabia and Israel.
Iran’s involvement in Yemen is viewed by many as a proxy battle against Saudi Arabia, which leads the coalition fighting against the Houthis, thereby deepening the sectarian divide between Sunni and Shia Muslims in the region.
Moreover, Iran’s actions in the Middle East have broader implications for international security and global trade, especially considering its role in incidents involving the security of maritime navigation in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf.
By allegedly backing attacks on international shipping lanes, Iran not only asserts its regional power but also signals its capability and willingness to disrupt global supply chains, which can have significant economic repercussions worldwide.
Consequently, Iran’s regional policies and actions are closely monitored by global powers, leading to a tense and precarious balance in the geopolitics of the Middle East, with Yemen serving as a critical battleground in this broader struggle for regional dominance.
