Kerala has filed a new plea in the Supreme Court, seeking a stay on the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024. The state government argues that the rules, which pave the way for implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, are discriminatory and against secular principles. The rules allow for fast-tracking Indian citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived before December 31, 2014. Kerala contends that the rules are unconstitutional and arbitrary, as they discriminate based on religion and country of origin.
