‘Lethargy’ – Pundit singles out three Spurs stars who lost their individual battles vs Fulham
Jamie Redknapp has admitted that he is completely dumbfounded as to why Tottenham suddenly delivered such a lacklustre display, accusing the Spurs players of being too lethargic and arrogant against Fulham.
Tottenham delivered a statement performance at Villa Park against their nearest rivals for a top-four spot last week and many would have expected the players to kick on and go on a run.
However, what we saw at Craven Cottage was just the opposite, with the Lilywhites lacking the intensity and desire that they showed at the West Midlands, with Marco Silva’s men emerging as deserved 3-0 winners.
Tottenham stars fail to impress against Fulham
Redknapp suggested that the likes of Yves Bissouma, James Maddison and Destiny Udogie simply did not show any hunger to win their individual battles.
The pundit told Sky Sports’ broadcast (16/03/24): “When I’ve watched Tottenham this season there has been so much joy in their play. I thought those kinds of performances were a thing of the past, I didn’t think we would be seeing them again under Ange Postecoglou.
“They were off it from it from minute one. I’m looking for excuses. Yes, Van de Ven not playing is a big one because he is such an important player but there are other games when he hasn’t played and they have been fine.
“There was a lethargy about their play, there was no energy. There were players that have had big performances, Destiny Udogie, today he was so off it. Yves Bissouma in midfield, James Maddison, they never got to grips with it and won their individual battles.
Redknapp believes that it is time for Postecoglou to give his players a rollicking and let them know that they cannot approach games with this sort of attitude if they are to fulfil their Champions League aspirations.
The former Tottenham midfielder continued: “I almost want the manager to say there was a flu in the camp or something because I can’t fathom what I saw in terms of their energy. After last week, the way they played against Villa, they blew them away in the second half.
“But they came into this game with an arrogance. That we will turn up, play and win comfortably. The Premier League isn’t like that. This might be the warning he needs.
“Ange never has a go at his players but If I was him I would be fuming, pointing fingers in that dressing room saying, ‘If you think that’s good enough to make top four, we might not even make top five’. They have to get themselves going again. It was so uncharacteristic.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There was certainly an element of the players taking their foot off the gas a little and some lethargy creeping in. It is perhaps a reminder to Spurs fans that this is still an extremely young and inexperienced side, which has a long way to go before they can compete with the best teams in the division.
