Man Utd player ratings vs Liverpool: Forgotten forward Antony and Amad Diallo shine for Red Devils
Manchester United’s hopes of ending the season with silverware remain alive after they defeated Liverpool in a seven-goal thriller.
Man United dominated the first half with Scott McTominay putting them ahead in the 10th minute.
The Red Devils failed to take their chances to increase their lead and that came back to haunt them. Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah scored twice in two minutes right at the stroke of half-time.
Antony’s 87th-minute strike ensured that the contest stretched into extra-time. Fortunes looked to be on Liverpool’s side as Harvey Elliott’s deflected shot went past Andre Onana.
The Red Devils showed character and fight with Marcus Rashford levelling the score for the third time.
Old Trafford’s roof went off when Diallo’s low-drilled shot found its way past Kelleher in the 120th minute.
Let’s get into some player ratings.
Player Ratings
Andre Onana – 7/10
The Cameroon international is growing in confidence and that was visible again today. It would be too harsh to expect him to stop the two goals United conceded.
Diogo Dalot – 8/10
Another excellent performance from the full-back. He drifted inside to occupy midfield positions and distributed the ball well.
Raphael Varane – 7/10
The Frenchman defended the box well and showed why the club must keep him for at least another season. Not at fault for any goal.
Victor Lindelof – 6/10
A poor-headed clearance from the Sweden captain helped the visitors to score for the second time.
However, he showed elite mentality and commitment in the extra time when United defended with three at the back.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7/10
The full-back started on the left side of the defence to nullify the threat from Salah. He did well by keeping the Egyptian quiet until his substitution.
Kobbie Mainoo – 7/10
The youngster left everyone in awe with his quick feet. He was magnificent on the ball and went past Liverpool’s defence with ease.
It was a surprise to see him come off with Man United chasing the game.
Scott McTominay – 7/10
The midfielder found himself in the right position at the right time to put United ahead. He should have doubled his side’s lead but fired his shot straight at the goalkeeper.
Bruno Fernandes – 5/10
Fernandes was not at his best, as he gave the ball away cheaply. He went to the ground too easily when dispossessed for Salah’s goal.
However, he showed resilience by first filling as a defensive midfielder and then as a centre-back.
Alejandro Garnacho – 7/10
The youngster delivered a tireless attacking performance and was the most dangerous player on the pitch. He still had the legs to lead the counter-attack in the 120th minute of the contest.
Marcus Rashford – 6/10
Rashford pulled off a fine save early in the clash and created a fine chance for McTominay. He was guilty of letting Quansah pass him through for Liverpool’s equaliser.
He was non-existent in the second half and missed a golden opportunity in the 94th minute to take United to Wembley. Redeemed himself with United’s third strike.
Rasmus Hojlund – 5/10
The striker got only one chance in front of the goal but slipped. He was substituted early as he missed the previous four games due to an injury.
Substitutes
Antony – 8/10
A great moment for the Brazilian forward as he brought United back in the game by scoring the leveller late in the normal time.
Harry Maguire – 7/10
Another player who returned from the injury and did his job well.
Christian Eriksen – 6/10
The midfielder came on and spread the long balls over Liverpool’s high line of defence.
Amad Diallo – 7/10
The youngster worked hard, tracked back to win the ball a couple of times and scored the match-winner, which he will always remember.
