16/3/24
Vanarama National League North
Hamish Arnold
After a 3-0 defeat at Alfreton Town, Bishop’s Stortford’s relegation from Vanarama National League North was confirmed. Wins for Kings Lynn Town and Darlington mean the Blues are 29 points from safety with nine games left to play.
Aaron Greene made a run through the middle, twisting and turning past opposition players but fired a low shot wide of the right post. Jordan Thewlis was flagged offside as he tried to apply the finishing touch to a flick on, but Jack Giddens came out to close down the shooting angle, and Amadou Kassarate cleared. Liam Waldock cut the ball back from the goal line to the edge of the box for Thewlis but he skied his shot from the left side of the box, before a deep cross by Nathan Newall dipped at the far post area but couldn’t find a teammate. Giddens claimed a near post headed effort by Thewlis from a right wing cross, before Ryan Charles turned and fired low from 25 yards but wide of the goal. On the end of a counter-attack for Stortford, Jack Thomas set up Greene for a shot, but he miscued wide, before the Hosts opened the scoring when Harry Beadle’s backwards header was picked up by Thewlis, who lofted the ball over Giddens and into the net. Charles’ low cross from the left nearly delivered an instant equaliser, but the chance went begging with no teammate on hand to finish. A long ball from Giddens landed kindly for Greene in behind the defence but George Willis saved the first shot and the winger couldn’t reach the ball from the rebound. Waldock’s free kick from 30 yards went high but dipped late, it went off target at the end of the first half.
HT 1-0
A low cross from the left by Kennedy Digie wasn’t dealt with by the Blues and Thewlis finished from close range in space at the far post. William Fewster’s cross from the right fell to Jake Day but he fluffed his lines in front of goal and Giddens claimed the loose ball. Substitute Gio McGregor hit a powerful shot from 30 yards but straight at Willis, before Fewster curled in the third with a right footed shot from the left side of the box.
