Paul C. Haley, 77
Barnstable, Mass.
Lover of family, faith, and the ocean, Paul will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Paul passed away suddenly after a brief illness on Feb. 5.
Paul was raised in Marblehead, Mass., at his family’s waterfront marine business, where he developed a lifelong love of sailing and all things related to the sea. His life on the water included assisting with running the Marblehead Marine Center, traveling across the oceans onboard research vessels, and sailing Tern, a 100-year-old Friendship sloop around Marblehead and to Maine.
Paul was an esteemed marine surveyor who specialized in wooden vessels both small and large such as the USS Constitution, the Mayflower 2, the Presidential Yacht Sequoia, and the schooner Ernestina-Morrissey. Paul was a commodore of the Friendship Sloop Society for two years during 2001 and 2002.
Paul received great comfort from his faith and his church family. From his conversion to the Catholic Faith at Saint Joan of Arc in Orleans to Saint Francis Xavior in Hyannis, he was a daily communicant and active in all parish activities, and a proud member of the 4th degree of Columbus and their Honor Guard.
As a loving, devoted and supportive husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather, Paul was ever-present in the lives of his family. Serving the role of patriarch to the extended family, he was a pillar of support, and a provider of sound advice and guidance to all. One of his many gifts to his wife Betty was digging the holes and walls to build gardens at their homes.
An early adopter of social media, Paul kept his family connected, informed and amused. His love and devotion for Betty and his daughter Catherine was immense and witnessed by all.
