Emmy Experts predict Meryl Streep (‘Only Murders in the Building’) will win Best Comedy Supporting Actress
Having trouble predicting who will win Best Comedy Supporting Actress at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”). The other potential nominees at this early stage are Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”), Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”), Abby Elliott (“The Bear”), Janelle James (“Abbott Elementary”), Liza Colon-Zayas (“The Bear”) and Allison Janney (“Palm Royale”) — but that could all change in the coming months.
As of this writing, five out of our eight Emmy Experts predict a victory for Streep: Eric Deggans (NPR), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Susan King (Gold Derby) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby). On “Only Murders” Season 3, she takes on the role of aspiring actress Loretta Durkin, who begins a relationship with Martin Short‘s Oliver Putnam. Streep is a three-time Emmy winner for “Holocaust” (1978), “Angels in America” (2004) and “Five Came Back” (2017), as well as a triple Oscar champion for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979), “Sophie’s Choice” (1982) and “The Iron Lady” (2011).
Two other Emmyologists, Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby) and Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), instead believe Einbinder will prevail for “Hacks” Season 3. She plays Ava Daniels, a young comedy writer who is hired to come up with some fresh material for a veteran comedian, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart). Einbinder scored back-to-back Emmy noms in 2021 and ’22, and now the show is back on HBO after a year-long delay.
Finally, Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) goes out on a limb for Ralph for “Abbott Elementary” Season 3. She won this Emmy category in a bit of an upset in 2022 for her role as Barbara Howard, the conservative kindergarten teacher on the ABC mockumentary. Ralph was nominated again in 2023, but lost out to Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), who is now competing up in the lead actress race.
Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Comedy Supporting Actress category include Edebiri, Ralph, Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”), Annie Murphy (“Schitt’s Creek”) and Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
