Convenience store theft suspect arrested after attempting to flee

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A man who allegedly stole from a convenience store was arrested after police say he attempted to escape in a stolen car Wednesday evening.

According to Portland police, a suspect stole a large amount of cigarettes and alcohol from a north Portland convenience store and then fled the scene in a white Lexus SUV.

Officers say they found the suspect multiple times and he continued to elude, until he eventually crashed into a curb, tearing one of the car's tires off.

Authorities say the suspect continued trying to drive on the car's rim, but eventually jumped out and ran.

After a perimeter was formed in the area, officers found the suspect and he was eventually taken into custody.

Later, officials say they learned that the suspect had assaulted a driver and stolen the Lexus.

Ryan Poffenberger, 37, was booked and faces charges including unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, first-degree theft, eluding, reckless driving, third-degree robbery as well as additional warrants for multiple other incidents of theft, including identity theft.
