Former BBC correspondent dies aged 91 as tributes paid to ‘journalistic icon’
FORMER BBC journalist David Capper has died at the age of 91.
The Belfast man was the broadcaster’s Ireland Correspondent for 26 years.
Capper was a regular voice on TV and radio during the Troubles.
He left the BBC shortly after reporting on the Enniskillen bomb in 1987 but continued to work in media.
He eventually settled in Donaghadee in Co Down where he had spent a number of childhood summers.
Capper was also a dad-of-three and had nine grandchildren.
Director of BBC Northern Ireland Adam Smyth said he was a “journalist icon” on a special tribute.
He said: “BBC Northern Ireland has lost a journalistic icon.
“David was the epitome of impartial and courageous reporting in the public interest.
“He was an eyewitness to some of the most harrowing events of The Troubles, including Bloody Sunday, and could be fully relied upon to provide a trusted account of what he saw.
“Many senior figures in local journalism also have David to thank for passing on his considerable skillset to junior reporters starting out in the industry.
“Our deepest condolences go to David’s family circle.”
Former UTV Political Editor Ken Reid has also sent his condolences to David’s family.
He said: “David Capper has died, aged 91.
