Towson merits a replacement Walmart store | READER COMMENTARY

I have lived in Towson for many years and recently retired as a dental hygienist. I have also been fortunate that there are so many stores to choose from in Joppa Road and Goucher Boulevard area. My favorite though has been Walmart. Not only are the prices good, the employees are always so friendly and helpful. People always ask me, “Why don’t you shop at Target?” The Target in Towson is always poorly stocked or everything is in disarray. Their employees are not nearly as friendly as in Walmart and, frankly, their prices are higher. Plus they don’t carry everything. No tool department, crafts and other things I am able to purchase at Walmart (“Shoppers surprised, saddened by loss of Towson Walmart: ‘It’s like your neighbor,'” March 12).

When this Walmart opened, it took a bit of getting used to. It replaced a Montgomery Ward store that had been there for a very long time and it took up two floors. It had its problems. The escalators didn’t always work as well as the elevators. All in all, I felt very comfortable there and mostly always found what I was looking for. Since the location of the store was so close to my house, I would be in there sometimes at 6:30 in the morning and usually several times a week. I knew the names of several employees, including John the greeter who was always friendly.

Sadly, the nearest Walmart is either in White Marsh or Cockeysville which is 15 to 20 minutes from my house. I know there are so many people that want another Walmart near to them. Can’t they find another location that serves Towson? I tried to contact Walmart, but in a world of impersonal communication, I was unable to reach them. I know I am not the only person to express my thoughts but, hopefully, if enough people speak up, maybe there will be a change.
