Trump-loyalist Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) was asked by Fox News' Maria Bartiromo what the Republican Party would do to ensure elections are fair and transparent in November, and he gave a succinct answer — nothing.
“There are a lot of questions about some of the efforts around the open border and what it means for the census and what it might mean for the upcoming election,” said Bartiromo, who herself played a role boosting conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election.
“What are you doing to ensure a transparent and free election in November?”
“The federal government, we don’t get involved in elections,” replied Donalds. “We should not be involved in elections. That is something that states have to do.”
Historically, while states directly administer elections, the federal government has played a strong role in overseeing the process and making sure that voting rights are respected, as many states have passed laws intended to make it harder for certain groups to vote.

Donalds went on to add, “Unfortunately, New Yorkers lost their ever-loving mind, I don’t know what they’re doing in that state when it comes to the law, but it’s going to be incumbent on other states to make sure that illegal aliens do not vote in our upcoming elections.”
It wasn't clear what Donalds was referring to, but he may be talking about a rule in New York City, struck down in court but currently on appeal, that allows noncitizens who are in the country legally to vote, but only in local elections.
Donalds has become one of Trump's most passionate supporters in Congress, and is reportedly up for consideration to be his running mate in 2024 — although ironically, before Trump became president, Donalds, then a Tea Party activist, was highly critical of him.
