TOPEKA (KSNT) - A north Topeka grocery store will have more compost than it knows what to do with next weekend and is inviting locals to swing by to collect some for their yards.
Dillons announced in a press release that it is celebrating Earth Month through several efforts, including a planned giveaway of a huge amount of free compost. This is the fourth year running the grocery store has given away compost to locals.
The store is partnering with Quest Proganics and Missouri Organics to share 50 yards of compost made from food waste. People can bring buckets, bags and shovels to pick up their share of compost to help out with their gardens.
“Earth Month is more than a month of awareness, it’s a chance to refocus our commitment to advance positive impacts for our planet,” said Sheila Regehr, Dillons corporate affairs manager. “Dillons is proud to support healthy, thriving communities during Earth Month and every day through our Zero Hunger | Zero Waste impact plan. That includes our in-store composting program, which has been an impactful recycling process for excess food waste. We are excited to once again team up with Quest Proganics and Missouri Organics for our Earth Month celebration in sharing compost made from excess food waste from our Dillons stores."
Dillons is also offering customers new reusable bags with $1 of every purchase of the bags going towards the Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation. The foundations has contributed nearly $60 million to organizations nationwide in its effort to create communities free of hunger and waste.
The compost giveaway starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 6 at the north Topeka Dillons located at 800 NW 25th Street. To learn more about the Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation, click here.
