We were quoted £5k for a new fence so did it ourselves for a fraction of the price – the results speak for themselves
THEY were quoted a staggering £5,000 for a new fence.
So a couple have shown how they managed to do it themselves, for a fraction of the price.
They took to their Surrey Renovation page on TikTok to share a step by step video of the process, writing: “When you get quoted £5,000+ for a new fence, you decide to give it a go yourself!”
They began by “adding wooden frames around the posts and fence to have something to nail into”.
Next, they stapled heavy duty weed control fabric to the frames they’d made – with the fabric hiding the old fence behind the new one they were building.
The next step was to start “building the fence“.
They used 20 pieces of “44mm UC4 redwood planed landscape batten from Champion”, and nailed each batten into the frame.
The video concluded by showing off the finished look, as they wrote: “Complete! Materials and tools – just under £1,000!”
And the comments section was quickly filled with people praising the pair for the impressive DIY job.
“Now that’s how to polish a turd haha!” one wrote.
“Looks brilliant!”
“That’s amazing tbf,” another commented.
As a third said: “Lets normalise DIY again!”
“I absolutely love it but what does it look like from the other side for your neighbours or is that not an issue?” someone else asked.
To which they replied: “It’s the same height for the bits visible & also our side fence so no issues!”
“This looks so good!!” another praised.
“5 grand? no chance!” someone else insisted.

“Hope you use some oil on the wood or they’ll look tatty within 6 months!” another advised.
“We will.. next job!” they replied.
Not everyone was convinced though, with one writing: “So you covered it up?”
“Yeah for 5k you’d of got a new fence, not a bit of wood screwed to an old knackered fence,” another raged.
With the pair hitting back: “1. It’s screwed onto the concrete posts. 2. We didn’t want to spend 5k.”
