In her viral video, Mattie (@needmorefarms) revealed the five hardy plants she recommends adding to your flowerbeds this spring.

The farm worker explained that each of the spring transitional flowers is “sun-loving.”

LANTANA

Mattie told her followers that the plant is drought-resistant and a pollinator attractor.

“You cannot kill a Lantana, it loves the heat, and it loves to bloom,” she said.

The flower continuously blooms providing your garden with a bright burst of color until winter.

PORTULACA

Mattie described the flower as having a “gorgeous bloom” and revealed that it does not require much watering.

She added that the plant is similar to a succulent and thrives in droughts.

“Portulacas are great for people with a black thumb who still want to plant flowers,” she said.

ICONIA BEGONIAS

Mattie explained that the bright plant thrives in most weather conditions.

Whether they’re placed in the shade or direct sunlight, she said the flower “blooms like crazy” and is considered drought tolerant.

GERANIUMS

Mattie described the plant as a “classic” and explained that it loves sunlight.

Full sun exposure means the flower blooms continuously until the weather gets colder.

Geraniums are also drought-resistant, making them ideal for first-time forgetful gardeners.

The plant is also a helpful addition to your yard as it works as a natural mosquito repellent

  1. Banana peels, vinegar, and coffee grounds are often recommended as natural fertilizers.
  2. Dollar Tree sells four packs of seeds for $1.25.
  3. Try a vertical planter like Amazon’s Mr. Stacky 5 Tier Stackable Planter, $35 to make more use of a small space.
  4. Use netting like the Garden Netting Pest Barrier, $8, from Amazon to keep away bugs that eat your vegetables.
  5. Try sacrificial planting to reduce the use of pesticides and keep pests away from your garden. Deliberately growing certain plants to attract agricultural pests can keep them away from the plants you want to protect. Examples include marigolds, lavender, catnip, and chives.
  6. For pesky weeds in your garden, the Grampa’s Weeder – The Original Stand-Up Weed Puller Tool with Long Handles, $45, from Amazon is a helpful tool you can use without having to bend over.

VERBENA

Mattie described the plant as a “gorgeous spiller” that “blooms a ton.”

She added that adding Verbenas to your flowerbed will attract butterflies to your garden.

Instagram users shared their thoughts on the recommendations in the comments section.

“I love them all but I’m pretty sure I have a black thumb so I will try the Portulacas,” wrote one viewer.

“I also love Lantana. I planted some last summer after seeing them in a neighbors garden. They bloomed all summer long!” said another follower.

“Portulacas were a favorite of my mom. I grow them wherever I can. As a black thumb, they work for me,” commented a third person.
