Lead Consultant Nutritionist Shona Wilkinson of Beauty & Vitality weighed in on the dos and don’ts after 40.

The advice came as peri-menopause and the loss of estrogen can contribute to signs of aging.

Wilkinson gave her input on how to combat the issues that come with hormonal changes.

The beauty advice works from the inside out for a more youthful look.

ANTI-AGING ADVICE

Dry skin, loose jowls, and hair loss are all a common sign of hormonal changes, according to Wilkinson.

“With dry skin becoming a notable challenge during menopause, it is important to use mild cleansers and regularly moisturize,” she said.

She also gave her advice for safely healing a complexion that feels too dry.

“[Wash] with a mild cleanser rather than soap, apply a good moisturiser after bathing or whenever your skin feels dry, [and] see a dermatologist if skin dryness persists,” she said.

Wilkinson also gave tips for those dealing with looser skin following menopause.

“Studies suggest women lose on average 30% of collagen levels in the first five years of the menopause, after which it slows to about 2% a year,” she said.

“As collagen levels drop, so the skin can be more prone to reduced firmness and sagging, especially around the jawline, neckline and cheeks.

“[This], in turn can lead to jowls, thinning skin, crepey neck and wrinkles.”

She added her advice for tackling the telltale signs of aging.

“[Protect] your skin from the sun by applying good quality SPF products before going out,” she said.

“[Also], consider using skincare products that contain pre and probiotics as well as other skin nutrients such as retinols and peptides.

“Pre and probiotics to help boost your skin’s microbiome to strengthen skin defenses, help slow the signs of aging, reduce fine lines and wrinkles.”

HAIR CARE

Wilkinson also stressed the importance of daily habits when it comes to tackling hair loss.

“As a result of hormone levels dropping, hair thinning and loss is another common symptom,” she said.

“To help counter these effects, consider diet, lifestyle, [and] stress levels.

“Try increasing phytoestrogen-rich foods into your diet. Phytoestrogens are natural plant substances that behave like weak oestrogen in the body, and may help to balance hormones.

“Foods that contain the best healthy sources of phytoestrogens include beans and pulses, fermented soya products (tempeh, miso and natto), flax seeds and sesame seeds.”
