More than just books: National Library Week
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Is there a book on your reading list you've been meaning to crack open? Now is the perfect time, as it's National Library Week! But are you aware of all the programming at your local library that goes beyond checking out books and using the computers?
Most public libraries host their share of meetings and events in the communities they serve. The Albany Public Library's calendar is jam-packed with stuff, from story time for kids, to office hours with your state representatives.
Despite having plenty of options to learn and play, a report from the American Library Association describes 2023 as a tumultous year for libraries, as many across the country were at the center of book ban challenges and controversies. However, the report also highlighted ways the spaces continued to provide critical support to their communities.
Library staff say this week is your chance to support them back.
According to Albany Public Library's Executive Director Andrea Nicolay, you can support your public library by writing to your legislators, who are at the center of budget discussions surrounding funding for public libraries. You can also run for one of three open positions on the APL's Board of Trustees. There's an even easier way to get involved, though.
"The best and easiest way to advocate for your public library is just to use it," Nicolay added.
