Emmy Experts predict ‘The Crown’ will win Best Drama Series

0

Having trouble predicting what will win Best Drama Series at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, with the majority saying the trophy will go to Netflix’s “The Crown.” The other potential nominees at this early stage are Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show,” HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” Showtime’s “The Curse,” Netflix’s “3 Body Problem,” Prime Video’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and Disney+’s “Loki” — but that could all change in the coming months.

As of this writing, six out of our 11 Emmy Experts predict a victory for “The Crown” Season 6: Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby). This is the last installment of the beloved regal drama, which won Best Drama Series for Season 4 in 2021. Likely acting nominees for the final hurrah include Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip and Khalid Abdalla as Dodi Fayed.

Two other Emmyologists — Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby) and Jazz Tangcay (Variety) — instead believe “The Morning Show” Season 3 will prevail. This series about a fictional A.M. news program is a favorite of the TV academy’s acting branch, winning for Billy Crudup as Cory Ellison in 2020, and receiving noms for Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Mark Duplass, Steve Carell, Martin Short and Marcia Gay Harden along the way. However it’s never been nominated for the top Best Drama Series prize … until now?

As for the other three pundits, Kelly Lawler (USA Today) thinks Season 2 of period piece “The Gilded Age” is the one to beat, Ben Travers (Indiewire) forecasts a victory for Season 3 of spy caper “Slow Horses,” and Peter Travers (ABC) goes out on a limb for Season 1 of satirical thriller “The Curse.” These three programs are all looking for their first series bids this year, and with seven of last year’s eight nominees not eligible (“The Crown” is the only one that is), things are looking good for a major shakeup in this hot race.

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Drama Series category include “Succession” in 2023, ’22 and ’20, “The Crown” in 2021, “Game of Thrones” in 2019, ’18, ’16 and ’15, “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2017 and “Breaking Bad” in 2014 and ’13. Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
