‘Reservation Dogs’ will get a farewell hug from the Emmys

0

“Reservation Dogs” has been one of the most delightful shows to watch for its three-season run, with the FX series wrapping up last September. Created by Sterlin Harjo and Oscar-winner Taika Waititi, the comedy series follows the lives of four Indigenous teenagers (played by Devery Jacobs, D’Pharoah Woon-A-Tai, Lane Factor, and Paulina Alexis) as they try to scrape, steal, and scour enough money to leave their reservation community in rural Oklahoma.

The show is a wonderful depiction of the specific lives of these characters and delivers coming-of-age stories with wit, warmth, heart, and brains. It’s a terrific show that critics have fallen in love with.

Dan Einav (Financial Times) opined: “The series too has matured into one of the very best of recent years… We might be left howling for more, but the show does a good job of teaching us the value of moving on.”

Maureen Ryan (Vanity Fair) observed: “With clarity, acerbic humor, and a great deal of concise yet spacious visual and verbal poetry, ‘Reservation Dogs’ taught its characters — and us — that while those bonds could be annoying and inconvenient at times, they were not a trap.”

Brian Tallerico (The Playlist) proclaimed: “‘Reservation Dogs’ is another one of those excellent half-hour shows that feels like it defies simple genre classification.”

Proma Khosla (Indie Wire) explained: “It’s a show that the audience would stick with for 10 seasons, but can also send off with dignity and respect after a truly magnificent three. Walk in beauty, my friends.”

Priscilla Blossom (The Wrap) stated: “Basically, everything that has worked from the start of ‘Reservation Dogs’ back in 2021 is present, but now it’s even more enjoyable because there’s history behind it.”

As a result, “Reservation Dogs” has landed in our lineup of predicted nominees for Best Comedy Series, alongside “The Bear,” “Hacks,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” and “Palm Royale.”

And there are plenty of reasons to believe “Reservation Dogs” can stick its landing and earn a first-ever Emmy bid for Best Comedy Series.

Firstly, “Reservation Dogs” has performed well at other awards groups of late. It was nominated at the WGA Awards for Episodic Comedy (that marked its fourth overall bid from this guild) It was also named as one of the American Film Institute Awards’ 10 best programs of the year for the third year in a row. And it reaped four nominations at this year’s Critics Choice Awards — Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Actor for Woon-A-Tai, Best Comedy Actress for Jacobs, and Best Comedy Supporting Actress for Alexis. The show clearly has support across the industry and that should translate into Emmy success.

Emmy voters love to include coming-of-age stories in this category, with shows like “Wednesday,” “Emily in Paris,” “Pen15,” “Modern Family,” and “Glee” all earning nominations.

The fact that this is the show’s farewell season shouldn’t hurt its chances, either. “Reservation Dogs” could join a whole host of shows nominated for their final editions, including the likes of “Ted Lasso,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Barry,” “The Kominsky Method,” “The Good Place,” and “Schitt’s Creek.”

While all of those shows had contended for previous seasons, there is plenty of precedent for “Reservation Dogs” to earn a sole Best Comedy Series bid for its final season. Both “Fleabag” and “Pen15” earned Best Comedy Series nominations only for their final seasons. “Reservation Dogs” could do the same.
