Why pro golfer Cameron Young wears an MLB patch on his shirt
UPDATE: We wrote this for the 2022 PGA Championship, but Young is now in the running at the 2024 Masters!
If you’re reading this, Cameron Young is probably in contention at another major golf tournament, which also means you may have noticed an MLB logo on his clothing as he plays over the weekend. What’s the deal there?
It turns out the league sponsors him! And thanks to the Chris Solomon and the No Laying Up podcast, we now know why:
“The commissioner of baseball, Rob Manfred, is a member at Sleepy Hollow,” Young said. “My parents have known them for 20 years; they’re great people. When I first turned pro they took us to dinner, and afterward Rob leaned in and said, ‘Would you wear the MLB patch?’ And at the time I had just gotten [PGA Tour Canada] status or it was just before I got Canada status, so I was nothing — no status anywhere, essentially. And so I said ‘absolutely, I’d love to,’ and they’ve been there ever since and they’ve been an awesome partner.”
This is something golf fans are wondering about, but they certainly tweet about it when he plays:
Is Cameron Young sponsored by @MLB or something??? pic.twitter.com/l8o9SndDmO

@UniWatch What it looks like when golf meets baseball during the first round of The Masters & Opening Day. Cameron Young is wearing a MLB patch on his left sleeve @TheMasters. He almost looks like an umpire out there with the blue shirt and grey pants. #OpeningDay #themasters pic.twitter.com/qupYxOioUo

Isn’t it weird to see Cameron Young wearing an MLB patch while trying to win the PGA Championship? I wonder how that happened.

As far as I can tell, according to this Golf.com story in 2015, others have been sponsored in the past by MLB:
“[Peter] Malnati is one of four professional golfers sponsored by Major League Baseball and the first to win a Tour event under the “MLB.com” logo. Baseball’s other brand ambassadors include Champions Tour pro Billy Andrade, 2014 Byron Nelson Championship winner Brendon Todd and Tour veteran Spencer Levin.”
I learned something today too!
