UFC 300 results: Jessica Andrade edges out Marina Rodriguez in striking battle

Jessica Andrade notched her 17th octagon win at UFC 300 – a promotion record for most in women’s history.

Andrade (26-12 MMA, 17-10 UFC) outstruck Marina Rodriguez (17-4-2 MMA, 7-4-2 UFC) to earn a split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28) win in their women’s strawweight bout, which was part of the UFC 300 preliminary card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

In Round 1, Rodriguez threw kicks up the middle, while Andrade fired back with low kicks. Rodriguez landed a big combination on Andrade, who kept moving forward. Rodriguez slipped on a kick and Andrade capitalized by taking top position. Rodriguez attempted a D’Arce choke submission from bottom, but Andrade popped out and finished the round in top position.

In Round 2, Rodriguez landed a big right hand, and started to amp up the volume. An unfazed Andrade continued to push forward. Andrade pressed Rodriguez to the fence, but Rodriguez broke free. A frustrated Andrade recklessly blitzed forward and connected with a big right which hurt Rodriguez. Andrade closed out the round strong with a flurry on a seemingly hurt Rodriguez.

Rodriguez connected with a spinning back fist to kick off Round 3. Rodriguez showed a sense of urgency, teeing off with shots. Andrade tripped Rodriguez, but couldn’t keep her down. Rodriguez connected with a jab, followed by a left. A flying knee attempt was caught by Andrade, who worked for a single leg, but left her neck exposed. Rodriguez attempted a choke, but Andrade escaped. Andrade yet again put her foot on the gas in the final minute of the round, pressing forward with big bombs as the horn sounded.

After dropping three straight, Andrade rebounded with back-to-back wins over Mackenzie Dern and Rodriguez. Meanwhile, Rodriguez has now lost three of her past four.
