#6 Brown Men’s Crew Rolls Past #8 Northeastern for Dreissigacker Cup
BOSTON, Mass. – The sixth-ranked Bears captured the Varsity 8 race and Dreissigacker Cup with a victory over the eighth-ranked Northeastern Huskies Saturday morning on the Charles River.
“The team stepped up today and raced well as an entire squad,” said Head Coach Paul Cooke ’89. “All of our athletes put in strong performances. There was no let up. The Charles River was choppy and windy but we handled the conditions well.
“Northeastern is a strong opponent and our rivalry with them pushes us to get better. It’s good to have the Dreissigacker Cup back in the boathouse.”
The Varsity 8 shell, stroked by Nathan Swidler, jumped to an early lead over the Huskies in the first race of the morning. From there, the Bears held off the Huskies through the headwinds of the Charles to take a 1.6 second victory and Dreissigacker Cup.
The Huskies flipped the tables in the Second Varsity race and held an early lead over the Bears. Trailing by nearly a full length, the Bears pressed in the final stretches of the race and cut into the Husky lead, but the home shell held on for the 0.7 second win.
The 3V8 built a lead through the first half of the race and separated from the Husky crew down the stretch. The Elenna Seguin coxed crew crossed the line in 6:33.7 for a 6.6 second margin of victory.
The fourth varsity crew took an early lead over the Huskies and posted a time of 6:48.8 to comfortably finish first. The Northeastern 4V and Brown’s 5V raced alongside one another for the majority of the race, with the Huskies taking the narrow lead at the end to finish second.
The Bears return to the Seekonk River next week to welcome the Dartmouth Big Green for an evening of racing. The first race is scheduled for 5:40 p.m.
