On one side stand the candidates from the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party – Shashi Tharoor and Rajeev Chandrasekhar – both appealing to a Hindu voter base, while on the other side is a commoner, Pannyan Raveendran of the Communist Party of India (CPI).
