The Golden State Warriors finish off their regular season schedule with tonight’s home finale against the Utah Jazz. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 PM PT in San Francisco and can be watched on NBC Sports Bay Area.

Previously with the Warriors:

Golden State missed their chance at the eighth seed on Friday night after losing to the New Orleans Pelicans, 114-109. The Warriors started the game with an early 26-17 first quarter lead but would soon see it vanish after an onslaught of Pelican three-pointers led to them getting outscored in the second quarter 45-22.

A hot shooting stretch from Steph Curry managed to bring the game to within three points, giving Golden State a chance to tie. With just under 20 seconds left in regulation, Curry snaked around a Draymond Green high ball screen and settled for an off-balanced three at the top of the arc. The shot rimmed out, putting an end to the Warriors’ comeback bid.

Curry finished the night with a team-high 33 points on 7-of-13 shooting from three. Meanwhile, the Pelicans shot 52.6% from deep as a team, converting on 20 of their 38 three-point attempts. In addition to that, Golden State’s 16 turnovers doubled the amount committed by New Orleans (8) – something head coach Steve Kerr says was another big factor in Friday’s loss.

What to watch for tonight:

The Warriors’ loss against the Pelicans was made worse after the Phoenix Suns beat the Sacramento Kings later that night. A win would’ve put them ahead of both the Kings and the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth seed in the West, giving them control of their own destiny heading into Sunday’s game against the Jazz. However, the loss means the Warriors, not only have to beat Utah, but also rely on the Portland Trail Blazers beating the Kings and the Pelicans beating the Lakers in order to clinch the eighth seed.

Because of this, it’s looking more likely that the Warriors will finish as the ninth or tenth seed in the West, needing two wins in the Play-In Tournament in to officially clinch a spot in the playoffs. With that in mind, Golden State enters Sunday’s matchup weighing the risk-reward of going for the eighth seed versus resting their players for the tournament starting on Tuesday.

While the Jazz are not considered a tough matchup – 2-8 in their last 10 which includes a 118-110 loss to the Warriors last week – they have won their last two games, and they compete hard with a cast of rotation players stepping up in an increased role. Having said that, one of the Warriors’ biggest strengths this season is their depth. The opportunity to rest their key players while still giving themselves a shot at the eighth seed may be the move in this one as they look to finish off their regular season on a high note.

It should be a fun game. Enjoy the basketball Dub Nation. GO WARRIORS!!!
