Bob Day appointed permanent PPB chief amid crime, staffing concerns
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- In late 2023, Portland Police Chief Bob Day was sworn in to replace Chuck Lovell. Although it was supposed to be interim, Mayor Wheeler appointed Day as the permanent PPB chief on Friday.
A 29-year police veteran, Chief Day retired in 2019 before he was asked to return. He started as an officer, working his way up to captain, then deputy chief. Now as chief, he's leading the bureau as it deals with crime, drugs, homelessness and a staffing shortage.
On this week's Eye on Northwest Politics, Chief Day discusses why he is staying on in his role longer than the initially planned 18 months.
Additionally, he details how the bureau's new crowd control unit will differ from the rapid response team in time for what could be a volatile election season. He also discloses where PPB stands in terms of staffing and plans to add more officers to the ranks.
Furthermore, Day closes with his stance on the Portland Police Association supporting ballot measures which will weaken the authority and funding of the citizen oversight board and require City Council to maintain police staffing levels, establish a 24-hour detox, and increase Portland Street Response.
