Islamabad blocks regional group on Afghanistan due to Indian inclusion: Pakistani Media

The Express Tribune, a Pakistani newspaper, reported that the proposal for a regional contact group on Afghanistan has faced obstacles due to disagreements among participating countries regarding the presence of certain nations.

According to the media outlet, Pakistan has opposed the inclusion of India in this group.

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, put forward the proposal to form a regional contact group in February following the Doha conference on Afghanistan.

The main focus of this proposal was to appoint a special representative of the United Nations for Afghanistan, a move repeatedly rejected by the Taliban.

The Express Tribune, citing diplomatic sources, wrote that this proposal has been delayed due to disagreements over the inclusivity of certain countries.

While Pakistan opposes India’s participation in the regional group, India has recently faced tensions in its relations with the Taliban, but it has increased its engagement with Kabul in recent months.

The proposal to establish a regional group is part of the broader efforts of the United Nations to enhance coordination in dealing with the Taliban.

According to the Express Tribune report, a UN delegation is expected to travel to Kabul soon to follow up on the outcomes of the Doha conference and urge the Taliban to adhere to their international commitments.

The recent Doha meeting, led by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in February, gathered representatives from 25 countries and Afghan civil society to discuss Afghanistan’s ongoing crisis. Notably, the Taliban were absent from the discussions. The meeting aimed to tackle various facets of the Afghan conflict, emphasizing efforts to foster peace and stability in the region.
