I transformed my yard on a budget – my $60 DIY buy saved me $600 on mulch, the entire project took less than an hour
A YARD owner has shared how she transformed her yard on a $60 budget.
She explained that a quick gardening hack DIY saved her $600 on mulch replacement.
The crafty gardener (@lovem_or_losem) shared her trick in a viral TikTok video.
“$60 DIY versus $600 mulch replacement,” she said.
She panned over her yard, filled with aged red mulch she wanted to upgrade.
Instead of shelling out the cash for the mulch, however, she picked up a $52 gallon of PPG’s Permanizer Exterior paint in a deep red.
In a $9 spray paint container, she added the thick red paint and some water.
After giving the solution a good mix, she sprayed down the aged mulch, giving it new life and color.
She revealed that she covered her entire yard in very little time.
“The whole project took less than an hour,” she said.
Some of her viewers were shocked at how much the project would’ve cost her if she opted for new mulch instead.
“Who the hell buys $600 worth of mulch? Must be buying bags instead of scoops,” said one commenter.
Though it was more expensive than most people expected, the gardener revealed that the price estimate was correct.
“That’s how much we would have spent in mulch to replace it,” she said.
She explained that since she was located in San Francisco, it was difficult and costly to upgrade her yard with new materials.
“Problem is, there is no access in our cul de sac for a truck, and then nowhere to dump it and haul it to the back yard,” she explained.

Many were impressed with her innovative and simple idea.
“Okay, now that is genius!” said one commenter.
Some said they preferred the look of her method over an entirely new mulch replacement.
“At the end of the day, the $60 DIY was better,” said one viewer.
“From the landscape queen, nice job mama!” said another.
“I do something similar on mine but I made a river of mulch through my yard and then sprayed it blue. Looks awesome,” said a third.
