Capital Region duo running Boston Marathon

BOSTON, Mass. (NEWS10) -- Shaun Evans and his son Shamus have a lot of experience working as a team. Together, they thrive.

“Since 2013, I haven’t run a race without Shamus, and since that time we’ve run countless marathons," said Shaun.

For this pair from Galway, racing is just one part of a much bigger picture: promoting inclusion. This is something Shaun does regularly on the leadership team of Ainsley's Angels of America, which helps people with disabilities participate in endurance events like the Boston Marathon.

“In 2015 we ran across America from Seattle to New York City, donating running chairs to kids with disabilities like Shamus so that they could experience what we do together,” said Shaun.

Even with dozens of adventures and competitions under his belt, the Boston Marathon is something that Shamus, who was born with cerebral palsy, has been anticipating for years.

“We knew that Boston was an option, but we couldn’t do it until he was 18, so it was a really long time," Shaun said, with Shamus adding, "and now it's here."

"I hope that people will see us running the marathon and say, 'wow that's really cool. How can I get involved with that? And then they will," Shamus said.
