‘Expats’ could win Nicole Kidman Emmy #3

0

Nicole Kidman is one of the most decorated actresses working today, having won an Oscar for “The Hours” along with a BAFTA, six Golden Globes, two Emmys, and a SAG award for her varied work across her career. She could add to that extensive awards collection her with a powerhouse performance in Amazon Prime Video’s “Expats.”

The show, based on Janice Y.K. Lee‘s book “The Expatriates” and created by “The Farewell” director Lulu Wang, follows the lives of a community of expatriates in Hong Kong. Kidman stars as the wealthy Margaret, whose youngest child goes missing during a market excursion. Kidman proves once again how much of a dynamite actress she is, making a performance of this power look easy, as critics have noted.

Fletcher Peters (The Daily Beast) observed that this show “continues to present Kidman as one of the most gripping actresses in TV—if not the most gripping. This won’t be the first review — nor the last — to praise Kidman in particular. But it must be said: She’s an absolute revelation as Margaret. Insecure about her living situation but confident about her wealth, emotional but never over-the-top, understated but powerful, Margaret has a handful of intricacies that Kidman perfectly balances.”

Saloni Gajjar (The AV Club) proclaimed: “The show is led by Nicole Kidman who, not surprisingly, is a force of nature here… Kidman is gut-wrenching as a grieving mom, communicating her ache in every way, most crucially through her eyes and expressions. It’s impossible to look away from her.”

Aramide Tinubu (Variety) noted that Kidman is “astounding” in the role, writing: “Kidman’s performance as Margaret is particularly gripping. She is rightfully shattered by a major blow to her family, and she refuses to shame herself into acting like she’s not. As heartbreaking as her torment is to witness, it’s also refreshing to see a once enviable woman refusing to pretend that she is OK.”

Currently, we are predicting that the six Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress nominees (the category in which Kidman will be competing) will be Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”), Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Kate Winslet (“The Regime”), Juno Temple (“Fargo”), Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”), and Anna Sawai (“Shogun”). However, you should never rule out am actress of Kidman’s standing — for multiple reasons.

Firstly, we already know that Emmy voters love her. She was nominated for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress in 2012 for “Hemingway & Gelhorn” and in 2017 for “Big Little Lies.” She was also nominated as a producer on “Big Little Lies” for Best Limited Series. She won both of her “Big Little Lies” bids.

As she has proven twice, Kidman is the kind of actress TV academy members go for in this race. First, she’s a big-name movie star. Plenty of A-listers contend in this category, such as Jessica Chastain (“George & Tammy”), Kate Winslet (“Mare of Easttown”), Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Amy Adams (“Sharp Objects”), and Reese Witherspoon (“Big Little Lies”).

Secondly, she is an Oscar winner. Emmy voters love to invite the motion picture academy picks to their party. Chastain, Winslet, Blanchett, and Witherspoon all have at least one Oscar as do the likes of other Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress nominees Octavia Spencer (“Self Made”), Regina King (“Watchmen”/”Seven Seconds”), Patricia Arquette (“Escape at Dannemora”), and Laura Dern (“The Tale”). In fact, the year that Kidman won for “Big Little Lies,” four out of the six nominees were Oscar champs: Kidman, her co-star Witherspoon, and “Feud: Bette and Joan” duo Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon.
