Bengaluru: Dinesh Karthik was unstoppable on Monday night at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in an IPL 2024 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The RCB side lost the game by 25 runs, but Karthik’s blistering 83 off 35 balls has become the talking point. With the T20 World Cup around the corner, the selectors would be keeping a close eye on the IPL matches to see the performances of players ahead of the picking the squad. Karthik’s knock was laced with seven sixes and five fours and he kept the hopes alive till almost the final over in the mammoth chase. He hit sixes to all parts of the ground while the fans kept chanting, ‘DK-DK’.
The wicketkeeper’s race already has a number of contenders in Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, Dhruv Jurel, Sanju Samson and KL Rahul.
In seven IPL matches this season, Karthik has amassed 156 runs at a staggering strike-rate of 194. He comes in late in the innings.
Karthik was part of the Indian squad in the last T20 WC in Australian in 2022. He had a dream IPL and on the back of that he was picked in the squad. He was no where in contention before the IPL had started in 2022. So, Karthik does have a reputation of doing such things.
