The United Nations Women’s Section in its latest report has announced the deaths of over 10,000 Palestinian women as a result of Israel’s invasion of the Gaza Strip, with 19,000 children losing their mothers in the wake of this situation.
According to the UN Women’s report released yesterday, after six months of conflict, 10,000 Palestinian women have been killed in Gaza, among them an estimated 6,000 mothers, leaving behind 19,000 orphaned children.
The report states that women who have survived the bombings and ground operations by Israel have been displaced, widowed, and faced with hunger. This disparate and devastating impact continues to turn the Gaza war into a war against women.
Susan Mikhail, a UN official, states, “The war in Gaza is undoubtedly a war against women, and they pay a heavy price for this war.”
UN Women officials say that over one million Palestinian women and girls in Gaza are facing a catastrophic hunger crisis, with almost no access to food, safe drinking water, functioning toilets, or running water, putting them at risk of life-threatening dangers.
The organization has stated that access to clean water is especially crucial for breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women, who have a daily need for additional water and calories. Additionally, the ability for women and girls to manage menstrual hygiene with dignity and safety is essential. UN Women estimates that 10 million sanitary pads for single-use or 4 million reusable sanitary pads are needed to cover the needs of 69,000 women and girls in Gaza.
